The Avar burial ground of Frohsdorf

In the year 2000, the Avar burial ground of Frohsdorf (close to the city of Wiener Neustadt) was discovered through aerial photography in the so-called Steinfeld. The aerial photographic analysis resulted in 283 burials within an area of about 3.400 square meters. The scientific examination of this burial ground and its surroundings was and is financed by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) within the framework of research projects (2003-2007, P16593, principal investigator Univ.-Doz. Dr. Falko Daim; 2009-2012, P21181, principal investigator Dr. Gabriele Scharrer-Liška).

The archaeological excavations were completed on schedule in 2011. A total of 664 features - graves, post-holes and pits - were excavated and documented. Through the excavation process it became clear that not all burials were recognizable on the aerial photographs. A total of 501 graves were excavated and documented.
